      Smart grids represent an unprecedented opportunity to meet current and future energy demands in a reliable, resilient and environmentally friendly manner. Furthermore, through the deployment of smart grids, energy consumers can be transformed into prosumers. Blockchain technology, which is a distributed information and communication technology, has emerged as potential candidate technology that can enable decentralized smart grids. However, there remains a lack of literature on the utility of blockchain technology in the realization of secure, flexible and resilient smart grids. The aim of this study is two-fold: (1) to explore the role that blockchain technology can play in the deployment of smart grids and (2) to identify barriers to blockchain implementation in smart grids. Pertinent literature on smart grids, blockchain and resilience is collected and synthesized to address the aims of the study. Additionally, this research examines challenges and opportunities facing the integration of blockchain technology into smart grids and concludes with research implications as well as a potential path for future research.
