How to Teach Online Health Administration Courses Effectively.

      More than one in three U.S. higher-education students (7 million) took online courses in 2018. The COVID-19 pandemic has forced many health administration (HA) courses to pivot quickly, resulting in an urgent need for HA faculty members to teach online courses effectively. Nevertheless, some were anxious and apprehensive when asked to teach online courses because of unfamiliarity with effective online teaching techniques. Therefore, it is important to develop effective HA faculty members who give students timely and constructive feedback, foster interaction with students, engage students in online learning, and maintain instructor presence and organization. Several salient points emerged from a narrative review of literature (n = 38) regarding effective online teaching. Student engagement and faculty-student interaction matter the most to student learning. Student engagement also intersects with student motivation and active learning. Teaching online courses is unique in faculty and student roles, faculty-student communication and interaction, and flexibility of where and when teaching and learning take place. The best practices cover an online course continuum: (1) before--motivating and engaging students, and evaluating course site structure and organization; (2) during--promoting active learning through faculty-student interactions and enhancing instructional materials--usability for better learning experiences; and (3) after--engaging students in providing feedback on improvements.
